Alcohol
In England and Wales, alcohol misuse leads to some 33,000 hospital admissions each year for alcohol-related liver disease.
The Department of Health advises that men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol per day and women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units of alcohol per dayRegularly drinking more than the recommended number of units over a long period can lead to complications like:
- Certain types of cancer
- Memory loss, brain damage
- Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
- Liver disease, such as cirrhosis and liver cancer
- Stomach damage
- Potentially fatal alcohol poisoning
So you need to get the facts:
Excessive/Binge Drinking
Most people enjoy a drink from time to time and most of the time drinking doesn't cause any problems but drinking too much can be very harmful.
How many units are in your drink?
- 3 units
- 1 Pint of strong Lager or Cider
(5% vol. +) - 2 units
- 1 Pint of normal Bitter or Cider
- 2 units
- A small glass of Wine
(175ml) - 1.5 units
- 1 Alcopop
- 1 unit
- 1 measure of spirits
(25ml)
The above are estimated and you should always check to see what measure you are given. A unit of alcohol is 10ml of pure alcohol
