Gwynedd promotes Child Safety Week

News

As we note national child safety week (23 - 29 June), the message set forward by the Gwynedd Health Challenge Alliance is that small changes in your life can make a big difference to children's safety.

This is an important message when considered that figures show that approximately 14,990 children in Wales under the age of 5 were injured in the home in 2004. For a parent or a grandparent, this could mean driving more slowly in an area where children could be out playing, placing safety equipment in the home or putting electrical goods out of the reach of a young child.

Darren Griffiths, the Gwynedd Children and Young People's Partnership Strategic Co-ordinator said:

Every one of us can make a few small changes that could help ensure child safety - be that by placing stair gates and smoke alarms in the home or on the road as you take extra care in areas where children play.

Often it's those small things that can cause an accident, therefore a few changes can go a long way to ensuring the safety of children throughout the county.

As part of the week's activities, and in order to raise awareness about how to avoid accidents and injuries in the home, the Gwynedd Health Challenge Alliance in partnership with the Gwynedd Children and Young People's Partnership have arranged a variety of events as part of the Child Safety Week which include:

  • Training session by RoSPA (Royal Society for the prevention of accidents) for professional workers (Health Visitors, Communities First Staff) on 25 June
  • Parents group session with RoSPA - South Pwllheli Communities First on 25 June
  • Posters with local children showing how to be safe in the home can be seen in every Nursery, Cylch Meithrin, Child Carer and Surgery / health clinic in Gwynedd.
